Dead Inside: Do Not Enter — Notes from the Zombie Apocalypse

Dead Inside: Do Not Enter
by Lost Zombies
Chronicle
2011, 160 pages, 8 x 10 x 0.5 inches
$15 Buy a copy on Amazon

Some of my favorite things about zombie movies are the details of the changed world. The dead grass, broken windows, toppled telephone poles, abandoned cars with missing wheels and trunks left open, boarded-up buildings, spent ammo shells, and other signs of struggle and desperation serve to create a fascinatingly creepy environment.

And that’s why I like Dead Inside: Do Not Enter so much. The book consists entirely of letters, hand-written warnings, and pages torn from journal entries that were written during the zombie pandemic. The notes are on matchbooks, napkins, photographs, advertisements, shopping lists, road maps, scraps of cardboard, and gum wrappers. Some of the notes are written with pen and pencil, others are written with lipstick, burnt wood, crayons, and blood.

The messages of the notes themselves tell the tale of the rise of the zombie pandemic, from tentative, joking questions about a “really bad flu,” escalating to confused panic, and later to grim acceptance of the new reality that the survivors now must live in.

In the introduction to Dead Inside, we learn that these notes had been found in a Dora the Explorer backpack. The first note presented in the book was written by the man who killed the owner of the backpack, a girl who was about 10 years old and had been bitten by a zombie (but had not yet turned into one). The man wrote “I opened her backpack and found all these notes and letters. This stuff is poisonous. No one in their right mind should read it. Reading this is like looking into the sun.” – Mark Frauenfelder

Can’t stop, won’t stop: Protesters in Ferguson rally again, seeking justice for Mike Brown. More than a month and a half after his death, his killer, Darren Wilson, is still a free man. (Pt 2)

Because it wouldn’t be a protest in Ferguson without fuckery from the police. A driver plowed his car through protesters, grazing several and running over a young boys foot. Beyond taking several hours to transport the boy to the hospital, they took even longer to arrest the motorist. Who did they not wait long to arrest? Two of the protesters who had been documenting the altercation for the world to see. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. #staywoke #farfromover #nojusticenopeace

I’m considering launching a trans writing project. The idea is a tumblr where everyone under the trans umbrella would be welcome to submit fiction (or non-fiction), no matter their skill level, about trans characters or their experiences regarding being trans etc. Whatever they want. I just thought it would be nice to have a community specifically for trans people & creative writing.

It’s something I’ve been thinking about for some time, but I probably wouldn’t really have time to moderate such a community by myself, so I’m looking for potential moderators to help.

I think I’d like two to start with, preferably a non-binary person and a trans woman. I would like at least one dmab trans person involved. It’s preferable if you’re a writer, but a keen reader may also be considered (as a lot of moderating will be reading content).

Moderators would be responsible for reading submissions and making sure that they are within guidelines (which we can draw up together) and tagging triggering content appropriately. You may also be responsible for answering asks, but I’m not really looking to make this an advice blog (if we start getting a lot of asks for advice, we could always set up a separate blog). Submissions should not and will not be judged on spelling or grammar, we’ll be screening for troll posts & unacceptable or oppressive content.

Moderators will have to be comfortable with working closely with myself (a trans guy) and one other person (perhaps more if it takes off) both on tumblr and using private messaging (Skype).

The tumblr I have set up is transpeoplewrite, so if you’re interested in a trans writing community, please feel free to follow (although nothing is set up yet and it might take a few weeks to get started).

If you are interested in being a moderator, please send me an ask or you can e-mail me at feministroosterteeth@gmail.com

A signal boost would be appreciated!

i’ve heard in the longest time, and the result? the result from these men who claim that they would be all for feminism if it weren’t for all “the man hating”?

image

do not be fooled for one fucking second

you can be as kind, calm, attractive and male inclusive as they demand for our voices to matter and the result is the same.

these people do not hate feminism because it “hates men”, these people have historically and to this day hated feminism because it’s purpose will result in the taking away of their power.

Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog

You ain’t nothing but a hound dog (x)

The original FUCK Elvis!

You heard it right. Elvis stole the song from her and got all the credit.

White artists stealing black art and  sterilizing it for white audiences is nothing new.

General comment about the music industry that “original” songs  being associated with their artists became more of a thing in the 60s and everything previous to that was a completely different model.

All artists used many of the same songs, writers and singers were generally different entities: i.e. all of much of Elvis music was actually from other writers. Same with Frank Sinatra, his albums were covers and songs written by other people.

This version of the song is actually in the music Hall of Fame and spent 14 weeks at the top of the R and B charts, seven weeks at #1. Elvis’ version was known to be a cover, because it was a famous song before his sang it, and his cover is only one of several hundred covers of this song in existence. This song was written originally be song writers for Thornton because her record label wanted her to have a big hit and the things that she had released previously were not doing excellently.

Realistically? Get angry at the record label for doing what they always did to artists and writers and screwing both Thornton and the two (white) men who originally wrote the song for her, which she spoke out against vehemently. Though she still got her fame. This is a very famous song, and for those of us who know our rock history, we know who the original voice was.

Someone set Mike Brown’s Memorial on fire in the middle of the Night

Residents are rebuilding another memorial.

FERGUSON • One of two Michael Brown memorials burned overnight, though it’s not clear how.

Memorial items near a post along the street burned. However, a larger memorial in the middle of Canfield Drive, marking the spot where Brown died, is several feet away and was not damaged by fire.

For weeks, burning candles have been part of the memorials near the shooting site on Canfield Drive, but it was unclear if the fire at the roadside memorial was set or an accident. One photo showed an empty, overturned votive candle next to the burn site.

Some residents of the area were upset, claiming the fire was set by someone in the pre-dawn hours early Tuesday and that they smelled gasoline in the aftermath.

Many on Tuesday morning had gathered on Canfield Drive, which police had closed. Some were rebuilding the memorial with a blanket and a new collection of teddy bears and other stuffed animals next to the soot-stained pole.

Actually, I’d say that if you’re white, and doubting that there is racism in this country, a glance at the comments should cure you of that.
